Hospital Weighted BlanketsAt Regions Hospital, Gretchen Prohofsky, OTR/L is finishing up her Masters in Occupational Therapy to learn how to apply sensory interventions in behavioral health, which she says is a newer concept for this area of practice. Gretchen sent this email to Cozy Calm: (Used with her permission). She talks about how patients are reacting.

Hospital-Grade Weighted Blanket Questions?

Our hospital grade weighted blanket is made with medical grade fabric, which is:
  • Bacteria Resistant
  • Fungus Resistant
  • CAL 117E (Fire Retardant Standard)
  • Fluid Proof
  • 16CFR Part 1632 Class B (Flammability Standard)
  • Stain Resistant
  • Washable
Construction
They are filled with medical-grade plastic beads to give the weight.  The beads are in an inner liner sewn at intervals so they don't slosh around.  The outer covering is attached to the liner.  The blankets are sewn with industrial-strength thread by professional sewers at our shop in Minnesota so they are made to last.

Choosing the Weight
Our weight chart can help you choose, but for a hospital environment, you can consult with occupational therapy staff, and we are available to give our experience on what works for patients at hospitals and other institutional settings.  Contact Eileen by email or at 763-533-6125.

Note:  Actual finished weight will vary based on who is filling the liner, fabric weight variations, and fabric lot dye saturation.

Cozy Calm,

Thank you so much for offering a hospital grade fluid-proof fabric for the weighted blankets.

Many individuals with mental health disturbances also have a co-occuring sensory processing disorder.

A couple of years ago, we began using regular weighted blankets [from a different supplier] that we washed in between patient use. These blankets are now falling apart.

We love the new hospital grade fabric that can be cleaned with germicide in between patient use. These blankets will last much longer, and will be able to greatly impact more patients.

I love your quick turnaround time as well. The previous blankets I ordered took 3-6 months to arrive. Your blankets arrived within 2 weeks; I was pleasantly surprised!

Since we began using weighted blankets on our inpatient mental health units, we have seen a drastic decline in the use of seclusion and restraint, as well as safety sitters.

Some of the common themes we hear from patients are that they feel calmer, more grounded, safe and secure, centered, improved concentration, decreased stress and anxiety, as well as having improved sleep. The patients are very interested in learning about their sensory processing disorder and request reading materials to increase their understanding.

The patients are also receptive to utilizing additional sensory tools to positively impact their quality of life. I look forward to working with your business in the future!

Sincerely,

Gretchen Prohofsky, OTR/L BH Allied Health Manager, Regions Hospital
